The Lord Lister Hotel

Located on the edge of the Medieval market town of Hitchin, during your stay you can walk along the old cobbled streets to explore the fine Tudor and Georgian buildings, particularly around the market square, as well as the range of shops, restaurants, cafès, pub and theatres. In the evenings you can relax in the cosy hotel bar that overlooks the garden, or unwind in residents' TV lounge. You can also take the time to keep in contact with friends, family and colleagues using the Wi-Fi internet access. The hotel was originally a wool comber's House built in the late 18th century, owned by Thomas Williams. It later became a Quaker school known as the Isaac Brown Academy and many of Britain’s eminent 19th century scientists were educated there. The most famous of these was Joseph Lister who pioneered germ free operations and became known as the 'father of antiseptics.' We can also provide conferences facilities on request. The lounge may be booked as a separate 'break-out' room, on request.

Hitchin is easily accessed from the M1 (10-15 minutes) and A1M (5 minutes). The Lord Lister has its own guest car park at the rear of the hotel. As the hotel is close to the M1, it is convenient for those visiting Stevenage, Letchworth or Luton. Lord Lister is also within convenient reach of Cambridge, London's West End and the City, Luton Airport and Central England. By Car: From the M1: - Exit at junction 10. - Follow the A505 ring road around Luton, heading towards Hitchin. - At Hitchin, continue on the A505 following the signs to Stevenage and the A1 (M). - At the large roundabout at the top of the hill, take the first exit, signposted Hitchin Town Centre (you will pass the Three Moorhens Pub on your left). - The Lord Lister is a further 500 yards on the right, off a mini roundabout. From the A1(M): - Exit at junction 8. - Take the exit signposted A602 to Luton Airport and Hitchin. - Follow this road for approximately 3 miles. - At the first roundabout, take the fourth exit signposted Hitchin Town Centre (you will pass the Three Moorhens Pub on your left). - The Lord Lister is a further 500 yards on the right, off a mini roundabout. On-site parking is available.

Local Attractions

St. Mary's church

The church is mainly of the 14th and 15th century but the foundations of a Saxon church lie under the floor of the Nave and are probably those of the original building.

First Garden City Heritage Museum

The museum is housed in a thatched building that was the drawing offices of the towns' original architects Barry Parker and Raymond Unwin. It provides a fascinating insight into the vision of Ebenezer Howard, one of the world's great social reformers.

Knebworth House, Park and Gardens

Historic Knebworth House and Gardens, home to the Lytton family for over 500 years, is surrounded by 250 acres of beautiful parkland.

Rooms

The hotel has 2 four-poster rooms: one is authentic with dark furniture and is a smoking room; the other has recently been renovated with a bath, but no shower, and is non-smoking, this room overlooks the garden at the back of the building.

The front rooms all look at Bridge Street, which is the oldest part of Hitchin. There is a separate building joining to the main building with some non-smoking rooms.
