Southampton is a vibrant and lively city, situated on the south coast of England, a ferry ride away from France and the rest of Europe and one hour from London by train. Known throughout history as the ‘Gateway to the World’, Southampton remains a premier international port. Its bustling marina, Ocean Village, hosts the international Boat Show as well as international sailing events such as the Volvo Ocean race and the BT Global Challenge Round-the-World yacht race. The population of approximately 200,000 includes some 40,000 students and accordingly, the city provides a wide variety of entertainment and leisure activities as well as an abundance of parks.

The English south coast, upon which Southampton is located, is one of the warmest places in the UK, although as throughout the country, the weather can be unpredictable and rain can occur at any time of year. Snow occurs rarely and it is unusual for the temperature to drop below freezing. Uni-link provides bus services interconnecting University campuses with links to rail, air and ferry services. Southampton Airport provides a range of domestic and continental services. The airport is a ten-minute taxi ride from the University and there is also a bus service. Fast rail services from London and Bournemouth/Weymouth serve Southampton Central and Southampton Airport. Both are served by uni-link buses. Local services and slow trains from London and Bournemouth/Weymouth also stop at Swaythling Station which is a twenty minute walk from the University, or a five minute walk from the Wessex Lane residences.
